This report must be in the form of a story. It
will be more useful if you use a story that has happened or could happen to you. You will
remember the material better and your audience will enjoy it more and likely give you a
better grade. Choose a story that would cause your ANS to have a great deal of
sympathetic tone or choose one that would cause your ANS to have a great deal of
parasympathetic tone. Stories involving parasympathetic tone is a little harder to write
about but either one will work for this assignment.
b) Remember that the autonomic nervous system is active during rest and regeneration
(parasympathetic) and fight or flight (sympathetic). Each of these states has a measurable
effect on all systems. This is done by activating specific tissues and cells and by using
specific chemicals. For this assignment, only explain the effect of the autonomic nervous
system (ANS) on coronary circulation, systemic circulation and cardiac output.
Concentrate on the chemical, cellular and tissue levels in order to be successful with this
part of the assignment. Avoid terms like “the body”, “the cardiovascular system”, “the
nervous system”…… these are too vague. In addition to chapters on heart and circulation you
will need to brush up on autonomic nervous system function which are found in the chapters
of the text that cover the nervous system (chapter 15 of the McKinley text book). I have
you doing this assignment early in the semester because every time we go into a new system
we need to know how the ANS helps in regulating that system.
c) You must never use quotes or copy a sentence word for word from your text book or from
any other source. You must convert all material to your own words. This is challenging but
you must do this. Use the required terms as you prepare your report. I strongly recommend
that you stick to your textbook. On line references will not be good for this report because
they will be too vague or too detailed. You will be timed by your computer so you will know
exactly how long your report is before you upload it to d2l. Make sure that you are within
the required time limits before you upload to d2l. See the grading rubric.
d) Recording an audio file is easy and you have the software on your laptop to do it. If you are
using a windows operating system (on any computer other than an Apple brand computer)
follow these steps.Oral and Written Assignment, AP2 on-line and face to face

3) Tips on the written notes that you use for your oral report (20 points).
i) Write notes to yourself that you can use for your oral presentation with references
from the text book (any text book will work for this). These may be in bullet point
fashion or in complete sentences. References are required. Zero (0) Points
maximum if no in-text or works cited references are found. See the “examples of
in-text and works cited” document in the materials/content/course resources in
d2l.)
ii) Include the following required terms.
neurotransmitter, at least one specific neurotransmitter must be described,
receptor, vasodilation, smooth muscle, vasoconstriction, tunica media,
circulation, stroke volume, autorhythmicity, SA node, AV node, heart rate,
atrial filling, venous return, general systemic resistance to blood flow, blood
pressure, increased perfusion, decreased perfusion, precapillary sphincters,
arteriole, organ, tissue, cell and chemical.
iii) Use bold font for the required terms just like I have here.
