3.1.1. Overview
In this unit, we will explore how we develop concepts, best examples…prototypes, and how we organize that information. We will look at a variety of models and the benefits and weaknesses in each that have been discovered. It is conceivable that there is no absolutely correct model, so you can look for the ‘best fit’.
In addition, we will explore the role of imagery in our conceptual knowledge. Imagery is closely related to perception and there is overlap in many of the mechanisms to each. We do know that the use of imagery can improve our memories…think about the Method of Loci. When we imagine an object to be something else, we can remember it…like going to the store for cheese, eggs and bread. If I imagine a bedroom with eggs as pillows on the bed, bread as a comforter on the bed and Swiss cheese hanging on the wall as art, I won’t forget anything! All I have to do is imagine my bedroom.
