I then argued that even if the above assumption is to be accepted, it needs to be qualified by considering the following assertions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Representative democracy based on universal franchise is a relatively recent phenomenon in the Global North. Universal franchise is yet to be fully realized in the Global North. In the recent years, the Global North has been witnessing a significant ‘democratic decline’, practically when one considers the erosion of ‘civil rights. Ironically, various forces on the far-right who have been ‘elected’ to representative institutions, are pushing for the erosion of civil rights. In the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, ‘democratization’ has been used as a justification for violent forms of intervention in the Global South ranging from military invasions to economic embargos and sanctions. Far from ‘democratization’, these violent interventions in the Global South have often empowered anti-democratic forces. By considering historical examples such as the Paris Commune, we then proceeded to have a discussion on the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. Is representative democracy ‘genuinely democratic’? Could representative democracy be a form of dictatorship? Is ‘direct democracy’ a practical alternative to ‘representative democracy’? Can representative institutions be utilized for a transition to a ‘genuine democracy’? 2. Watch the following documentary: Zapatista (1999) Link: Video Answer the following questions:         Do you consider the Zapatista uprising as ‘democratic’ and if so, why?
