Assessement on a new client

Write a six-page double spaced paper. The paper should be separated into five sections which can be seen below. The paper must have a cover page and a reference page. Section 1 (minimum of 1 page) – A client that we will call Jack presents to you as an individual that has been recently released from jail and is awaiting trial for felony assault and armed robbery. Your role is to assess the client and determine whether he needs counseling services. During the interview, the client begins to share about how the system is rigged against him and about how no-one in his life cares about him. The client also seems visibly irritable and upset. You don’t know if this individual is guilty and should not judge him based on his pending cases. List four attending skills that you could utilize during this session and explain how each attending skill could potentially help you assess this client. Section 2 (minimum of 1 page) – Define empathy in your own way and subsequently explain four empathetic traits that any counselor or interviewer should have and explain how each of these traits could potentially help them effectively work with Jack. Section 3 (minimum of 1 page) – It has been determined that Jack is in need of counseling services, and he has been placed onto your caseload. Jack often makes self-defeating statements, seems to have no hope for his future, and presents as confused and angry. He tends to think negatively about self and society. He lacks the ability to make clear remarks. Using the knowledge that you have gained throughout the entirety of the course, explain how various skills learned in this class could help you work with this client towards improving his mental wellbeing. Section 4 (minimum of 1 page) – Throughout counseling, you find out that Jack is guilty of all his charges and that he also abuses cocaine periodically. Jack said the following during your last session: “Obviously cocaine is not good. I know I should stop, but it is what it is. How am I supposed to stop when no-one cares about me? Why would I stop? You heard me. I also shouldn’t be committing these crimes, but that’s the life I live.” Explain what stage of change Jack is in and explain a minimum of 3 counseling/interviewing techniques that you would implement based on the stage of change that the client is in. Include specific responses associated with each technique that you mention. Section 5 (minimum of 2 pages) – Think of the concept that you learned in this class that you feel will be the most helpful to you in your career. Explain this concept in a way that would help someone outside of this class understand it. For instance, you could choose stages of change, being empathetic in a counseling relationship, basic attending skills, cultural competence, or something else that we focused on within the class. Include three sources and make sure to cite the sources in a bibliography using APA format.
